Who Am I?

Who am I? Salina Yoon. 2011. [January 2011] Scholastic. 12 pages.

I walk sideways
on the sand,
underwater
and on land.
Who am I?

My jaws are sharp,
big, and wide.
When I am near,
others hide.
Who am I?

I wear a shell
and swim free.
My flippers glide
through the sea.
Who am I?

I love Who Am I? even more than I loved What Am I? Once again, we have riddles written in rhyme. The first book, What Am I?, focused on transportation (cars, trains, planes, etc.) The second book focuses on animals. Ocean animals to be exact. We've got seahorses, whales, sharks, crabs, etc. I loved the format of this one--the design of it. The colors are so bright, so bold. They contrast so well with the black silhouette of the animal. And the pullout card reveals the answer to the riddle and reveals the colorful animal beneath.

I would definitely recommend both books!

What Am I?

What Am I? Salina Yoon. 2010. Scholastic. 12 pages.

Four black tires
on the go,
through the traffic
fast and slow.
What am I?

Rotor spinning
Way up high.
Engine running
In the sky.
What am I?

I really, really enjoyed this clever riddle board book. It is part of Little Scholastic's board book series. This one and its companion, Who Am I?, are for toddlers aged 1 to 3. What did I love most about this one? I loved the concept. I loved the riddles. The ones in this book are all about modes of transportation: trains, boats, motorcycles, cars, airplanes, helicopters. I loved the format of this one--the pullout pages that "reveal" the answer. The art revealed is very bright, very bold, very fun. And the answer also appears in print on the black card.

It's just a fun, fun book.

Farm Parade

Farm Parade! Thom Wiley. Illustrated by Benji Davies. 2011. [January 2011] Scholastic. 12 pages.

A cock-a-doodle-doo started the show.
The animals were all ready to go!
Oink, Oink, sang Pig as he marched through!
Sheep skipped and danced--what a hullabaloo!

There are a lot of board books about farm animals. How is Farm Parade special? Well, the format of this one makes it unique. The animals literally are on parade as the pages fold out to reveal the action. On one side, readers hear the story. On the other side, readers see the animal names. The story itself was okay--nothing wonderful, nothing special. But the format of this one made it fun.

The 39 Clues: The Emperor's Code

The Emperor's Code. (The 39 Clues #8). Gordon Korman. 2010. Scholastic. 176 pages.

The sneezing began the instant the pet carrier passed the passenger's nose.

When the novel opens, Amy and Dan Cahill are still trying to process the news of which family branch they're from. (And they are NOT happy.) Will they ever get comfortable with the truth? Only time will tell. One thing for sure, both are losing patience.

Dan and Amy are losing patience with each other. They are fighting more than ever before. And one fight will even lead to an unexpected separation...will time apart help them realize how much they love (and need) each other?

But Dan, at least, and perhaps Amy to a certain degree, are getting tired of chasing clues. (I'm glad I'm not the only one. It was refreshing to know that I wasn't the only one getting bored with all the excitement and danger.)

This one is set, for the most part, in China.

The first seven in the series: The Maze of Bones, One False Note, The Sword Thief, Beyond the Grave, The Black Circle, In Too Deep, The Viper's Nest.

My thoughts: I do struggle (at times) to stay interested in this series. A few of these have surprised me, however. I do care enough to want to know what happens in the end. So that's why I'll keep reading this series despite the fact that I'm not liking each title.

Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman

Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. Francesca Simon. Illustrated by Tony Ross. 2010. Sourcebooks. 112 pages.

Are you familiar with Horrid Henry? Have you read any of his previous adventures? Do you love or hate this little troublemaker? In Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman, readers are treated to four stories: Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman, Horrid Henry's Rainy Day, Moody Margaret's Makeover, and Horrid Henry's Author Visit. While the star of these stories is Horrid Henry, Perfect Peter and Moody Margaret get their fair share of attention as well!

Of the four stories in this Horrid Henry collection, my favorite is Horrid Henry's Author Visit. I just LOVED this one! One of Horrid Henry's favorite authors is coming to his school--his class. One of Horrid Henry's least favorite authors is coming to his brother's class. Can you guess where Horrid Henry ends up?! Why this one worked so well for me was the humor.

Milksop Miles is the author visiting Perfect Peter. He's the author of "The Happy Nappy." Here is how Horrid Henry describes it:
The Happy Nappy! Only the dumbest book ever. All those giant diapers with names like Rappy Nappy and Zappy Nappy and Tappy Nappy dancing and prancing around. And then the truly horrible Gappy Nappy, who was always wailing, "I'm leaking!" Horrid Henry shuddered. He was amazed that Milksop Miles dared to show his face after writing such a boring book. (70-1)
Turns out there's also a Happy Nappy song!

I enjoyed each of the stories in this Horrid Henry book. Here are the others in the series that I've read and reviewed:

Horrid Henry by Francesca Simon. 2009. Sourcebooks. 90 pages.
Horrid Henry Tricks the Tooth Fairy by Francesca Simon. 2009. Sourcebooks. 90 pages.
Horrid Henry and the Mega-Mean Time Machine by Francesca Simon. 2009. Sourcebooks. 88 pages.
Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb by Francesca Simon. 2009. Sourcebooks. 78 pages.
Horrid Henry's Christmas. Francesca Simon. 2006/2009. Sourcebooks. 112 pages.

Baby Nose to Baby Toes

Baby Nose to Baby Toes. Vicky Ceelen. 2009. Random House. 24 pages.

Tippy-top of baby's head.
Fuzzy little duckling's head.
Bright-eyed baby looks at you.
Bright-eyed fawn is peeping too.
Cranky, crying baby howls.
Grumpy, grouchy lion cub growls.

Baby Nose to Baby Toes is the follow-up to Baby! Baby! Both board books feature photographs of babies and animals. These photographs are placed side-by-side. The photographs are meant to complement one another. This second book features rhyming text. (The first book--at least the edition I had was wordless. Though it still puzzles me that in the publisher description online it said it paired photographs with simple text.) Some of these pairs worked better than others. For example, I liked the saggy, baggy elephant legs paired with wrinkly, crinkly baby thighs.

Overall, I thought the first book was cuter. Some of the pairs in this second one  I just didn't get--or didn't like. For example, the last pair which shows a sleeping baby and buggy-eyed frog. (Those pictures--in my opinion--had nothing to do with one another. Baby eyes--neither awake or asleep--don't look slimy, froggy, or buggy-eyed.)

If you are looking for board books with photographs, I'd recommend All About Me! A Baby's Guide to Babies, Margaret Miller's Baby Faces, Margaret Miller's I Love Colors, Margaret Miller's Baby Food, and Margaret Miller's What's On My Head?

Nonfiction Monday: Rags and Riches

Rags and Riches: Kids in the Time of Charles Dickens. Magic Tree House Research Guide #22. Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce. 2010. Random House. 128 pages.

In the 1800s, England was a very powerful country. The city of London was the largest, richest city in the world. Signs of the city's wealth were everywhere. Parks, stores, factories, and beautiful buildings filled the city.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say this is great nonfiction, I enjoyed it so much more than the companion fiction novel. It is informative. It is well-organized. It is simple in a kid-friendly way, but not in a condescending way. I liked reading about the aspects of culture and society. I liked how it focused both on Dickens himself and on his time. (One chapter is focused on Charles Dickens, "What Charles Dickens Saw," but the rest focus on London, on Victorian England.) Readers learn about the Industrial Revolution, factories, and working conditions within those factories. Readers learn about some of the *horrible* jobs that were the only ones readily available for the poor. But readers also get a glimpse of the other side. What life was like for the wealthier people.

I liked the amount of information in this one. I thought it was packed with information. (Much more than I was expecting.) And I liked the use of photographs. I wasn't thrilled that these photos were side by side with the cartoonish illustrations in the Magic Treehouse style. But, overall, I can say I liked this one.

A Ghost Tale For Christmas Time (Magic Tree #44)

A Ghost Tale for Christmas Time. Mary Pope Osborne. Illustrated by Sal Murdocca. 2010. Random House. 128 pages.

Jack and Annie were walking home from soccer practice. It was four-thirty in the afternoon. Sunlight was fading quickly.

Jack and Annie are off on another magical adventure--their 44th--in Mary Pope Osborne's A Ghost Tale for Christmas Time. In this "Merlin Mission" they are "saving" the world once again by using a magical instrument (this time a violin) to reach out to an incredibly gifted but at least temporarily depressed individual (this time Charles Dickens.) These two kids travel back in time to Victorian London--1843. Their goal is to find Dickens and encourage him to keep writing. While there, they witness some of the horrors of London life--if you're a poverty-stricken child. And, as you might have guessed by now, they "inspire" Dickens to write A Christmas Carol during their visit.

I am not a fan of Magic Tree House. I think this is only my second adventure, but I have a stronger opinion on this one. It just didn't work for me--as an adult reader. Perhaps if I was eight, perhaps if I was in an obsessed-with-series stage of reading, then I would think it more entertaining than how I perceive it now.
